Welcome! This is the devlog of “TeknoBoxa - Neon Arenas”, a tabletop fighting game inspired by boxing mechanics and cyberpunk aesthetics.
In this journey I plan to considerably rely on mathematical modelling, computer simulations, generative art, and legendary playtesting parties! Let’s start!
Disclaimer
I’m not a game designer nor a game artist and I apologize in advance to all of them. I’m a data scientist with some experience in the gaming industry, I’m specialized in modelling and simulating systems of interactions, and I always wanted to create a game. The goal of this project is to create a fun, well balanced, competitive tabletop game that people can enjoy playing. I hope you will join me in this exciting journey!
Initial ideas
TeknoBoxa - Neon Arenas is a tabletop fighting game combining boxing mechanics with cyberpunk aesthetics. There are some things that are clear to me right from the start of this project:
The main game mode is 1v1 player vs player
As in a boxing match, the gameplay is fast, tactical, and action-packed
The format is small, compact, and portable
Playtesting is used early and often
Computer simulations and mathematical modeling are used to balance the game
Generative AI is used for the art
Sounds cool? I think it really is.
Game design methodology
TeknoBoxa will be designed by iterating on the following basic cycle:
Each drafting stage aims to create a playable version of the game, starting with a basic version with minimal elements. This version is playtested to identify strengths and weaknesses, uncover hidden issues, and gather feedback and suggestions. This information is used to improve the current game structure via modeling and simulations. The current game draft is then refined. This process is repeated until the current game version feels satisfactory. Once achieved, new elements are introduced and the cycle restarts. Graphic design will move in parallel.
What’s next?
The next step will be to create a first draft around the core elements and mechanics of the game.
Thanks for reading and see you soon!
